The BikeShare program offers you the chance to borrow a bike for free for 48 hours at a time. We also host group rides and learn-to-ride sessions so that everyone can get on two wheels. The BikeShare program is a group effort between the Scarborough Campus Students Union (SCSU).
BikeShare is a free service run by the SCSU. It allows staff and students to sign out bikes for free for up to 48 hours. We also run group rides through Athletics on Fridays at 12:00, and free bicycle repair classes. For information and updates about the program, be sure to keep an eye on the Intranet.
There are a lot of different reasons why you might want to ride a bike. Bicycling is a great recreational activity. You can sign out a bike whenever the SCSU office is open and take a bike for a spin through the area’s scenic trail system. The pathway down the stairs behind the campus’ H-wing can take you all the way down to the lake in as little as 15 minutes.
This trail system can also connect you to both the Rouge hill and Guildwood Go stations, which is great because bicycles are a great way to commute to and from school. Why be stuck riding public transit for over $100 per month when you can sign out our bikes for free? It’s easy to work out a safe and enjoyable route to and from school, or wherever else you want to go. Toronto Bicyling maps are free to be picked up at the SCSU office’s front desk. You can use these to see established bicycling routes, and to find sidestreets on your own that connect up to make a safe route through areas that have low vehicle traffic.
BikeShare runs group rides through Athletics on Fridays starting at 12:00 outside of the SCSU office. These rides are open to anyone with an Athletics membership (generally all employed/enrolled staff and students). The rides are $2 for anyone requiring the use of a BikeShare bike, but are free for those that bring their own bike.
We are also starting up repair classes. An experienced bicycle mechanic will teach basic bicycle repair skills to participants for free. Check the intranet for details on these classes, and for other updates on the program.
You can sign up for the BikeShare program by attending a brief registration session. Sessions are currently run on Tuesdays and Thursdays any time from 2:00-4:00pm. Just show up at the SCSU office during this time and request to attend a registration session. Be sure to bring A $5 deposit, which will be returned to you when you leave the program, in order to sign out a bike.
If you can’t make it to these sessions, or if you have any other questions, you can email bikeshare@scsu.ca.
